Tata and Mahindra have come a long way in the Indian auto industry. Both brands have completely revamped their product portfolio to rejuvenate their sales and image. Mahindra and Tata have competing products in almost all major segments. But one area where Mahindra shines is the old school, utilitarian heavy duty cars. Mahindra has the Bolero in this segment, but what about Tata? Will we ever see a Tata Bolero competition? In today’s article, let’s find out.

Why don’t we see a Tata Bolero competition currently?

Tata Bolero competition

Tata used to have a competitor for the Bolero in the form of Sumo. It had a rear-wheel-drive setup, a diesel engine and a boxy silhouette to accommodate any type of luggage. But since then, Tata has moved away from such types of cars. It has shifted to monocoque platforms. The reason behind this is Tata’s focus on safety and comfort. Monocoque-based cars are light & fuel-efficient, offer better road dynamics and are safer as well. All of these factors combined bring out a perfect proposition for Tata to continue with the current monocoque setup.

Why does it make sense?

Tata has tasted success with the reintroduction of the Safari. So it will make sense for Tata to bring another iconic product in the form of Sumo. Also, people who want to upgrade from Nexon or Tiago will get a budget-friendly option. So could Sumo come back? There is no confirmation from Tata Motors but it could be a possibility if Tata decides to get back to its roots.

So will we ever see one?

So could Sumo come back? There is no confirmation from Tata Motors but it could be a possibility if Tata decides to get back to its roots. Though it doesn’t seem feasible from a lot of factors, there remains a market for such rugged and reliable SUVs. Mahindra has enjoyed great success with the Bolero, Thar and Scorpio. Tata should look to explore this segment. The Tata Bolero competition SUV has the market, but it depends if Tata is willing to enter this segment. As the future is aimed at electric cars, it seems highly unlikely that we will see a Tata Bolero competition coming.
