Hyundai as a manufacturer has seen a good amount of success in the country. Currently, its SUV lineup is ruling the roast, recently it also launched the Exter to take on the Tata Punch. However, its initial success has been down to its strong hatchback lineup. In the middle phase, Hyundai also tried merging both body sizes in developing a cross-over. This merger created the i20 Active. The i20 Active was a decent product for the brand, but it was discontinued after the launch of the new generation. Now with the launch of the Fronx, should Hyundai bring it back? In today's article, let's talk about the Hyundai Fronx rival.
As stated above, the i20 Active was a decent seller for the brand. The entire segment was quite popular, consisting of the Volkswagen Polo Cross, Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross. One by one, all of the cars were discontinued. So why are we talking about it now? Maruti launched the Fronx, essentially a cross-over version of the Baleno. The Fronx could help reignite the segment. If that happens Hyundai should also look to bring back the i20 Active.
i20 Active as a product
Let's first take a look down memory lane. The i20 Active is used to get cosmetic changes like black plastic cladding, roof rails, cornering lamps and aluminium skid plates. Other than this, the i20 active had 20mm more ground clearance to go with the look. In terms of engine options, it used to get a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel engine.
Hyundai Fronx rival - Will it happen?
This is a hard question to answer. There are advantages for Hyundai to bring back the i20 Active. However, the current i20 is a bit more sporty with a low-slung profile. So it will be hard for Hyundai to incorporate the crossover traits. If Hyundai does bring a cross-over version, it could get rugged bumpers and also increase the ground clearance from the current 170mm. For that, it would need to tune the suspension etc. However, for all this happening the i20 platform should support such modifications, which seems hard at the moment.
