Hatchbacks have always had the highest demand in India. For this very reason, Toyota launched the badge-engineered Glanza as it saw the Maruti Baleno hitting big numbers. Toyota recently launched the new Glanza in India recently. But it has done something even crazier with the Glanza in South Africa. Toyota has added a new, crazy powerful engine to the its premium hatchback, the Glanza. So what is this engine update? In today’s article, let’s find out.

Toyota recently unveiled the GR Starlet version in South Africa. For context, Toyota calls the Glanza ‘Starlet’ in South Africa. This GR version is the rally version of the old Glanza. The product is entirely built in South Africa and comes with all the safety standards required by FIA.

The overall silhouette is quite similar to the previous Glanza. But this GR Glanza gets a wide-body kit with a red & white colour scheme to highlight the rally scheme. It also gets white rally tyres. Coming to the interiors, it gets a completely new layout suitable for rallying with a roll cage and fire extinguisher.

The Glanza GR comes with a new powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. So what are its power figures? The engine is capable of producing power figures ranging from 184bhp to 259bhp. As this is a rally car, power is sent to all four wheels via a sequential gearbox.

So what is GR? The full form of GR is Gazoo Racing. It is the performance wing of Toyota. Toyota pushes the limits of some of its standard cars and sells them under the GR badge. Toyota recently launched the GR-S version of the Toyota Fortuner in India. But this version is limited to some cosmetic changes along with retuning of the suspension. It remains to be seen if Toyota ever brings proper GR-tuned cars to India. However, bringing back our focus to the Glanza GR, we don’t expect it to see in India since it is a rally-focused car. Rally-focused cars generally have modifications done to them that make them very different from road-legal cars and there would not be a significant base for Toyota to bring it to India.
