The 7-seater market has seen a lot of activity in the last few months. Tata sensed the change quite early and brought the Safari. It’s safe to say that the Safari brought the nostalgia back. However, a car that is equally iconic in the seven-seater space is the Toyota Innova. Toyota today launched the new Innova HyCross, and we are comparing it with the Tata Safari. So let’s compare the Tata Safari vs Toyota Innova HyCross.
Safari vs Innova HyCross – Dimensions
The Tata Safari is 4,661mm in length, 1,894mm in width and 1,786mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,741mm and has a ground clearance of 205mm. What about the Innova HyCross? The Innova HyCross is 4,755mm in length, 1,850mm in width and 1,795mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,850mm and has a ground clearance of 185mm. Overall the Innova HyCross is a bigger car. The Tata Safari is not small in any sense, but the Innova HyCross will provide a roomier cabin due to the bigger length and wheelbase. The Innova HyCross is also expected to comfortably seat three people in the third row, which is not possible in the Safari.
The Tata Safari only comes with a diesel engine option. It comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine capable of producing 167bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options include a manual and an automatic gearbox. It comes with different terrain modes and also drive modes.
The Innova HyCross, on the other hand, comes with only petrol engine options. It comes with two petrol engine options, a 2.0-litre pure petrol capable of producing 172bhp and 205Nm of torque coupled to a CVT gearbox. The second petrol engine is a 2.0-litre strong hybrid capable of producing 183bhp with engine torque of 188Nm and motor torque of 206Nm. This engine comes with a eCVT gearbox. Both engines miss out on a manual gearbox option.
The Safari is Tata’s flagship product and comes loaded with features. It comes with features like a panoramic sunroof, a nine-speaker JBL system wireless charging, an 8.80-inch infotainment system, ventilated seats in 1st and 2nd row, six airbags etc. What about the Innova HyCross? The Innova HyCross comes with features like a 10.1-inch infotainment system, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, Toyota Safety Sense (ADAS), powered tailgate, front ventilated seats, second-row seats with ‘Ottoman feature’, electronic parking brake, six airbags, etc.
Safari vs Innova HyCross – Pricing
The pricing of the Tata Safari starts from Rs 18.86 lakh and goes to Rs 29.00 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Toyota hasn’t revealed the pricing of the Innova Hycross. However, we expect its starting price to start from Rs 23 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) and its top variant could fall somewhere between Rs 34 lakh to Rs 40 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
The Tata Safari is quite a good option with its powerful diesel engine option and features. Another factor that plays well for Tata Safari is its tough and premium looks. On the other hand, the Innova HyCross is quite a competent product with its new SUV-like styling and hybrid engine. Also, Toyota has provided premium interiors and features to attract modern buyers. However, its MPV-like rear styling and smaller wheels could tone down its butch look.
So which is the better option? Some may like the aggressive looks and diesel engine of the Safari while others may like the reliability and ease of ownership of Toyota Innova HyCross. Overall, a lot will depend on the pricing of the Innova HyCross. If Toyota prices it aggressively, it could outperform the Tata Safari. However, Toyota has definitely taken the iconic nameplate ahead by leaps & bounds this time. The Innova has now become more premium and feature-loaded. So, for tech-savvy buyers who have been on the lookout for a modern car, the Innova could definitely become the next pick. The only thing that could go against the Innova Hycross is the unavailability of diesel engines.
