The lifestyle SUV has seen an exponential rise in sales in the last few years. The Thar nameplate has majorly contributed to this growth, with Gurkha giving a supporting hand. However, this segment remains quite a niche area for the majority of buyers. The major reason being they are not practical for everyday use. To solve this issue, manufacturers are working on a bigger versions of their respective SUVs. Force is working on the Gurkha 5-door, whereas Mahindra is also working on the 5-door Thar. But, today’s topic is; what all can the 5-door version borrow from the Scorpio-N? This is exactly what we discuss in today’s article.
New Mahindra Thar 5-door – Platform
Firstly, the Thar 5-door will use the same platform as the Scorpio-N. This platform is a heavily modified version of the ladder-on-frame chassis used in the 3-door Thar. Mahindra has done these modifications to improve handling and stiffness of the Scorpio-N. So can we expect this on the Thar 5-door too. Mahindra would definitely be looking to improve the handling of Thar 5-door, something that the brand has paid a lot of attention on for the Scorpio-N as well.
As mentioned above, Mahindra has put a lot of effort into improving the handling and suspension of the Scorpio-N. We could expect Mahindra to extend this to the 5-door version as well. Mechanically, the Scorpio-N gets a lighter mass on the suspension. Also, Mahindra Thar 5-door could have the same Watt linkage for the rear axle like the Scorpio-N. Leaving the technicals aside, the Scorpio-N does feel good suspension-wise. The SUV can easily absorb bumps in high-speeds. Also, at low speeds, the bumps are quite controlled. We can expect the same on the Thar 5-door.
New Mahindra Thar 5-door – Features
Features have become a vital part of car buying experience. This might not be a very important case for lifestyle SUVs like Thar, but still, many buyers lookout for these in rugged cars as well. Taking a look at the Mahindra Scorpio-N’s feature list, we can expect something similar on the Thar 5-door as well. What all could it get? The 5-door could get a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, and wireless charging. A similar-sized touchscreen with AdrenoX UI could also be a part of the package.
Variants & launch
Mahindra might limit the number of variants on the 5-door version. Moreover, Mahindra might offer it with 4×2 drivetrain as well in order to keep the starting price tag low. What about the launch? According to reports, Mahindra could showcase the concept car at the Auto Expo 2023. The launch may follow sometime later.
